Handcut Paper: The Road Goes Ever On, and On

The Road Goes Ever On, and On: Layered Handcut Paper
I created this piece in collaboration with The Paper Artist Collective (a worldwide group of paper cutting artists that I am a member of) and Arctic Paper (a paper company). I was asked to produce something that expressed my passion for paper in a piece of artwork.

I wound up producing a 17 layer illustrative paper cut. Each layer was hand-drawn, hand cut using a craft knife, and carefully painted using watercolors. I chose to depict a view of The Shire through a hobbit door from The Lord of the Rings. Much like Frodo when Bilbo left him the one ring, I stumbled into my own unforeseen journey when I was diagnosed with a chronic illness at age 15. It was a journey I didn't as for, but a journey I had no choice but to take. I feel a closeness with the comfort of The Shire, as well as an excitement for the adventure that lies beyond.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this piece is something that is challenging to capture in photographs, and that is the depth and spacing between layers. Nothing quite exemplifies it like watching the video below. The wood rounds that act as spacers were laser cut from 3mm plywood.
I am many times over in love with the outcome, and I hope you love it too!
Enjoy!
